How We Can Help
In many cases, symptoms go away on their own. Dr. Marchese recommends that those with pain and discomfort take aspirin or ibuprofen, eat soft foods and apply a warm compress to the areas where pain is felt.
In cases where pain and discomfort do not go away on their own, Dr. Marchese can recommend muscle stretching and relaxation exercises to perform at home. He may also fit you with a mouth guard to wear at night, particularly if you experience bruxism or teeth grinding. Bruxism is the most common contributing factor to TMJ problems.
If your TMJ is caused by bite misalignment, Dr. Marchese may perform an occlusal, or bite, adjustment. The adjustment could allow your jaw to close in its anatomically correct position and stop your TMJ symptoms.
